Stella, en ung tysk judinna, växer upp i Berlin under nazistregimens styre. Hon drömmer om en karriär som jazzsångerska, trots alla repressiva åtgärder. Efter att hon i februari 1943 tvingats gå under jord med sina föräldrar, förvandlas hennes liv till en hemsk tragedi. Genom ett svek tillfångatas hon av Gestapo och torteras. För att rädda sig själv och sina föräldrar från deportering till Auschwitz, börjar Stella systematiskt förråda andra judar. Från september 1943 till slutet av kriget skickade Stella Goldschlag hundratals andra judar till Gestapo.
