Våren har kommit och Verne och hans kompisar i skogen vaknar upp efter sin långa vintersömn. Men någonting stör friden. Ur tomma intet har en hög häck vuxit upp som på ett brutalt sätt stänger ute djuren från deras naturliga betesmarker. Den opportunistiske tvättbjörnen RJ, vet besked. Bakom häcken väntar det goda livet, där märkliga varelser som kallas människor framlever sina liv. De äter minsann inte för att överleva, de lever för att kunna äta. Sköldpaddan Verne är däremot lite mera skeptisk och menar att det alltid är bra att vara på den säkra sidan. Han propagerar för att djuren ska stanna i skogen. Men eftersom RJ är den som besitter de mest utstuderade manipulativa talangerna i djurkolonin, lyckas han snart övertyga allt fler djur om att det inte finns något att frukta, men allt att vinna på att ta sig över häcken. Snart står djuren beredda att ta steget över till andra sidan för att utforska en helt ny värld - förorten.
