En morgon rider Karin iväg till kyrkan med ljus till "Den Heliga Jungfruns ära". Sägnen säger att det enbart är en jungfru som får bära ljusen. På vägen möter hon tre vallare. Karin erbjuder vallarna att dela hennes lunch men de nöjer sig inte bara med maten. Hon blir överfallen, skändad och dödad. De stjäl även hennes vackra kläder. Vallarna fortsätter sin färd och kommer fram till Tore och Märetas gård där de ber om kvällsvard och husrum för natten. Man bjuder dem till bords, ovetande om Karins grymma öde. När sedan en av vallarna försöker sälja Karins kläder till Märeta börjar de förstå vad som hänt deras dotter...
