Halvdan Viking är elva år och bor i Östbyn med smeden Björn efter att hans pappa gett sig av på plundringsfärd. Men Halvdan är ingen "riktig" viking. Han haltar, har dåligt självförtroende och saknar en vän. I närheten av Östbyn ligger Västbyn. De båda byarna har legat i fejd med varandra så länge man kan minnas och det är förbjudet att befinna sig på fel sida av älven som delar de två byarna. En dag i skogen möter Halvdan plötsligt den orädda kungadottern Meia från fiendebyn Väst. Trots att de inte får träffas spirar en oväntad vänskap fram mellan dem.
