Varje år runt juletid stör de hans lugna ensamhet med sina allt större, mer skinande och mer högljudda festligheter. När invånarna i Vemdalen tillkännager att de detta år ska göra julen tre gånger så stor som förut, inser Grinchen att det enda sättet för honom att få lugn och ro är att stjäla julen. Han bestämmer sig för att klä ut sig till jultomten på julafton, och går så långt att han till och med fångar en ointresserad, missanpassad ren för att dra hans släde.
