Dian Fossey upprättade 1967 sitt forskningsläger högt uppe bland regnskogens berg i Rwanda och inledde en unik fältstudie av bergsgorillorna som slutfördes först 1980. Under dessa år kom hon de skygga djuren inpå livet som ingen annan tidigare hade gjort. Hon blev accepterad av gorillorna och kunde studera dem på mycket nära håll. Omvärlden beundrade henne, men genom sina maniska ansträngningar att skydda gorillorna fick hon många fiender och de som hatade henne var lokalbefolkningen. 1985 föll hon offer för en av sina fiender och mördades brutalt, 53 år gammal.
