Den tidigare stora skådespelaren, Serge Tanneur, har dragit sig tillbaka från strålkastarljuset. De senaste tre åren har han levt i ensamhet på ön Ile de Re där han spenderat sin tid med att cykla genom det vindpinade landskapet. Samtidigt planerar skådespelarkollegan Gauthier Valence (vars karriär är på topp) en produktion av Molières pjäs ”Misantropen” och vill ge Serge huvudrollen. Gauthier är övertygad om att Serge skulle passa utmärkt till rollen eftersom han själv blivit misantrop och dragit sig undan från samhället.
